US Congresswoman Barbara Lee and ANAC presents award to
Nigeria’s Maurice Iwu, INEC Chairman

US Congresswoman Barbara Lee, of the 9th Congressional District of California working in conjunction with All Nigerian American Congress [ANAC] recently granted  a congressional award to Nigeria’s Professor Maurice Iwu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).  Professor Iwu was recognized for his outstanding work in the promotion of democracy and good governance in Africa.

The reception was part of Symposium and Gala event with the theme “Strengthening the Nigerian Democracy".  The event was sponsored by the Institute for Advancement of Democracy [TIAD],[President Chuck Chukwuemeka] in conjunction with the International Leadership Institute [ILI] [. Dignitaries present at the reception include Mayor Wayne Smith of Rivington New Jersey, Nigerian Senator Nicholas Ugbane, Chairman, Senate Committee on INEC, Hon. Hamisu Shira, Chairman, of the House Committee on Electoral Matters, Professor Attahiru Jega, Vice Chancellor Bayero University Kano, and the Honorable Judge Lajune Thomas Lange, President International Leadership Institute [ILI].

His Excellency George Obiozor Nigerian Ambassador to the United States was represented by Dr. Umunna Orjiako Minister Nigerian Embassy Washington D.C.  Executive Officers of ANAC   led by Chief Temitope Ajayi, newly elected ANAC President [HOD] presented the award to Chairman Iwu. ANAC executives present at the event includes Honorable Mohammed Bagudu, vice Chair, Board of Trustees, Honorable George Mbagwu, Treasurer, and Honorable Dr. Abdul Lateef Kareem, ANAC’s Secretary General. Other Nigerian dignitaries and professionals present at the event  included Benedict O. Okwara, MD, Chairman, First Care Medical Clinics; George Nze, Chairman California Health Services; Polly Ubah, Director Supertots Educational Center, Inc;  Prof. Chudi Uwazurike Director African Profiles International and  Sam Uwandu CPA, President, Sam Uwandu & Associates.

All Nigerian American Congress [ANAC] ceased the opportunity to formerly present a letter on the organization’s proposals for Nigerian authorities to institute a head count for Nigerians living abroad, and to grant such group voting rights in the Nigerian general elections. In his response, Chairman Iwu thanked ANAC and US Congresswoman Barbara Lee for the award. He promised ANAC that with the help of Senator Ugbane and Honorable Shira, the letter will be hand delivered to President Obasanjo and the Nigerian Congress.
