PDP REMAINS THE PARTY TO BEAT: PDP 2007 CANDIDATE
WATCH OUT FOR DONALD DUKE, IBB, MIKE AKHIGBE, ABDULAHI ADAMU, PETER ODILI
As the quest for the leader of the most populous African nation heating up; multiple parties are seeking the presidency in 2007, one fact is remaining clear; the organized machinery of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is likely to remain largely intact and infact will remain superior to any other organized party or political groups coming together for the 2007 political exercise. The question remains who will PDP select, come December as the party bearer, going into the 2007 polls. With more than 30 political parties seeking the office of the president, PDP stands a shoulder above all others as of today. The main opposition party still remains All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) which is largely popular in the Northern states, with loyalist still enticed by religious and cultural sentiments in the predominately Muslim northern states. Efforts to nationalize the party has not been very successful, thou! gh 2007 could be a test of such efforts by ANPP. Other parties include the recently formed African Democratic Congress, Alliance for Democracy AD, Labour party and a host of other registered parties. More >>

Transcorp a cloak for financial crimes by Nigerian government leaders
Standing before the Senate Committee on the Capital Market, last week, Madam Ndidi Okereke-Onyiuke, the director-general of the Nigerian Stock Exchange who is now more popularly known as the chairman of Transcorp, finally told us what we had always known: President Olusegun Obasanjo, indeed, owns a chunk of Transcorp. But even in answering the Senate committee's questions, this lady still spoke as if Nigerians are dunces and so gullible.
There are two points she made which clearly show that those who rule over Nigeria today still believe that there are different sets of rules for different citizens. She stated she did not believe that Obasanjo committed any crime, because he announced his intentions to acquire the stocks beforehand and, secondly, that he had sold off the shares and therefore divested his interests in the company. Okosuns Leads Campaign For S'South Presidential Candidate
By Richard Eghaghe,CORRESPONDENT, Lagos
Musician turned Evangelist, Sonny Okosuns, may have won the mandate to champion the campaign for a South South president in 2007. His abode in Ogba, Lagos has now become a Mecca of sorts for politicians from the South-South geopolitical zone since the third term bid by the President Olusegun Obasanjo administration was thrown out at the National Assembly.

Close aides of Okosuns confirmed that the Evangelist may have eventually succumbed to pressures from his kinsmen to lead the South-South battle to grab the country's presidential seat in 2007. "Okosuns details is not just to lead the campaign for South-South presidential candidates for the major political parties, but to ensure that a South-South candidate emerged as the next president,"said one of his aides.
The choice of Okosuns, Daily Independent gathered, was informed by his impressive showing in his support for Chief M.K.O. Abiola during the 1993 presidential election, which the late business mogul was believed to have won. Okosuns was also an ardent campaigner for Obasanjo's presidency in 1999, a crusade he continued for the Obasanjo/Atiku return ticket in 2003.
Confirming his new role, Okosuns who up till recently, was a believer in the failed third term agenda of the Obasanjo administration, admitted being one of the patrons of the South-South movement in Lagos. "They have now asked me to co-ordinate the activities of the movement here in Lagos and I have expressed my wiliness to do that because that is what democracy and freedom is all about," he said.
According to the leader of the Nigerian Artistes For Peace, "my role is to work and pray and make sure the desire of the South-South movement in clinching the country's presidency come to pass. I have done it before. I am set to do it again for the South-South zone that has been denied that position since time immemorial. Fortunately, wherever I place my hands, I possess. We will not settle for anything other than the presidency in 2007," said Okosuns.
He however said that as patron and co-ordinator of the movement in Lagos, it is not his position to determine any potential presidential candidate for the South-South.

President Commends Nigeria on Call for 2007 Elections
Office of the Press Secretary
May 26, 2006
The United States congratulates the Government of Nigeria, President Obasanjo, and the Nigerian people on their continued support to promote democracy in Nigeria by calling for national elections in 2007. The decision to resolve the third term debate through constitutional means is a victory for democracy and the rule of law and provides a strong foundation for a peaceful and transparent election. President Obasanjo wisely resisted the invitation to challenge this constitutional outcome on the issue of a third term. The American people place in high regard the deeply held commitment of the Nigerian people to bring about change that is based on democratic values and practices.
Next year's constitutional presidential transition will mark the first time in Nigerian history that a civilian president hands over power through democratic elections. President Obasanjo was also Africa's first modern military leader to successfully guide a country's transition from military to civilian rule. We look forward to continue working with President Obasanjo to promote freedom and democracy for the people of Nigeria and peace and stability in the region.
