Beautiful Cars and Attractive Models
Or Attractive Cars and Beautiful Models - Which is It
 | If you go to auto shows in Geneva or Paris or Tokyo, sometimes it's hard to see the flashy new cars through the stick-thin fashion models striking poses in front of them. Gaggles of models. Queens of the runway have long been unofficially banished from U.S. shows, but a funny thing happened this year at the media preview for the North American International Auto Show in Detroit: The female fashions car models were back.
A few mostly European brands have sported fashion models in Detroit before. But generally not the American brands, Detroit's Big 3. The women in short skirts and high heels or knee-high boots were out in force earlier this week now that Italy's Fiat is running Chrysler. Fashion models were staked all over the Chrysler stand, posing right alongside the other models -- the cars -- that are supposed to be the focus of the show. Chrysler hired models for the Los Angeles Auto Show in December as well. "Beautiful cars and attractive models.
Internet Device Now Available on Cars
See New Internet Dashboard Design
 | Automakers and high-tech companies have found a new place to put sophisticated Internet-connected computers. They see vast opportunity for profit in working with automakers to create the next generation of irresistible devices. These companies are demonstrating the breadth of their ambitions, like 10-inch screens above the gearshift showing high-definition videos, 3-D maps and Web pages.
The first wave of these “infotainment systems,” as the tech and car industries call them, will hit the market this year. While built-in navigation features were once costly options, the new systems are likely to be standard equipment in a wide range of cars before long. They prevent drivers from watching video and using some other functions while the car is moving, but they can still pull up content as varied as restaurant reviews and the covers of music albums with the tap of a finger. Safety advocates say the companies behind these technologies are tone-deaf to mounting research showing the risks of distracted driving — and to a growing national debate about the use of mobile devices in cars and how to avoid the thousands of wrecks and injuries this distraction causes each year.
Saab Owners in the Northeast Campaign To Save The Brand
Portland Maine Dealer Takes The Lead
 | A Portland Saab dealership is leading a campaign to save the Saab brand of cars. Ryan Emge the owner of the Maine dealership, got other devotees of the cult car to converge upon General Motors and urge the auto giant to sell the Swedish brand it bought two decades ago, rather than closing it down. Emge says more than 50 Saab fans showed up at GM headquarters, some with their beloved cars. "We've had people drive from all over the country today, Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio, as far southeast as Virginia, Maryland, even Massachusetts on Cape Cod," he says.
The gathering got the attention of GM executives, who went down to meet with Emge and the other SAAB enthusiasts. "There's a lot of SAAB enthusiasts here at GM, and we're very heartened by their enthusiasm for SAAB," says Tom Wilkinson, a spokesman for GM. "And we all have our fingers crossed and hope that some sort of a deal can be put together to find a new buyer for SAAB." But Wilkinson says that just because GM is entertaining offers from several companies doesn't mean there will be a sale. "It needs to be someone that would have a reasonable success -- of being successful with SAAB. It really wouldn't do anybody any good to have SAAB go to a new buyer and then have the company fail shortly thereafter. It would leave consumers with no warranty coverage, it would leave dealers with orphan vehicles to sell." Wilkinson says the new buyer will have to overcome years of flagging sales for the cult car. The prospect of Saab has been particularly best in the Northeast, where the brand had its strongest sales. Many blame GM, saying the automaker did not properly market the cars.
GM To Close SAAB
Attempt To Sell Off The Ailing Car Division Failed
 | General Motors now plans to close its SAAB Car division as attempts to sell off the Swedish brand failed. This will be the latest in the multiple hard place issues facing the ailing Giant US automaker. Its last-minute negotiations to sell Saab to a Dutch supercar maker, Spyker Cars, fell apart because of due diligence issues that could not be resolved.
Those talks followed the collapse of a deal to sell Saab to another maker of high-performance cars, Sweden-based Koenigsegg. "We regret that we were not able to complete this transaction," said Nick Reilly, president of GM Europe. "We will work closely with the Saab organization to wind down the business in an orderly and responsible manner." GM has had a stake in SAAB since 1990 and later in 2000 it fully owned the Swedish car company. Although the government of Sweden has offered to make loan guarantees to a potential Saab buyer, it has refused to bail out the brand directly. Saab has 3,400 employees worldwide and 1,100 dealers.

Mercedes Vs Audi, Who will Win
E-Class Up Against A6 Quattro
 | The true blue E-Class fanatic and he will tell you that this is Mercedes-Benz's way of saying, "We are back!" Quality improvements have been made, reliability is on the up, the E-Class is better loaded and specced than its competition and a distraction called Chrysler has been offloaded. It all sounds nice, except that Audi have been quietly chipping away at the heels of Merc all this while. And the A6 has been recently facelifted, while being offered with the gung-ho, 290 bhp 3.0-litre supercharged V6.
To counter it, Mercedes-Benz have called on the best V6 in their arsenal - the 268 bhp 3.5-litre V6 from the S350 to take on the might of Ingolstadt. It's time to roll up the cuffs! For those familiar with the S-Class, this is the exact same engine block you will find on the larger sibling and is not the CGI, direct injection as one would have hoped it would be. Nevertheless, this is quite a jump from the erstwhile E280. Because the car sits lower and benefits from a very slippery shape, it cuts through the wind rather quickly. Even the 7G-tronic gearbox plays its role, as it doesn't linger into unnecessary revs, delivering power at the right rpm pretty much all the way through. In the city, the E-Class turns the tables. Because its gearing is unruffled by the constant shifting of ratios, unlike the Audi's multitronic, it delivers its torque seamlessly. The Audi, on the other hand, feels jerky at low speeds and the constant kicking in of the supercharger catches the gearbox and the driver off guard. The Audi's advantage lies in its quattro four-wheel drive system. Unlike the RWD unit of the Merc, you can dial more speed into the corner and exit at exactly the same speed, making slow-in, fast-out a thing of the past. So, on paper, the E-Class is incrementally better. But in real life, it is revolutionary and a revelation! The A6, despite its fantastic engine and quattro setup, scores only a win for Ingolstadt in feeling, yet E-class still takes the lead on paper.
Ten Percent of Americans Could Have Electric Vehicles by 2015
Nissan Carlos Ghosn Assures Americans
Nissan’s CEO Carlos Ghosn said that consumer demand for electric vehicles in the US might exceed President Obama’s target of one million plug-in models by 2015. Mr. Ghosn predicted that electric cars would account for about 10 per cent of global sales by 2020.
Speaking on the occasion of kicking off company’s electric car Leaf’s US tour, which aims at convincing people about new vehicle’s worth, the Nissan Chief Executive assured that the new battery-car will cost almost the same as a similar-size gasoline-powered car. But, consumers will have to bear a separate monthly fee to lease the Leaf’s lithium-ion batteries. Nissan’s Leaf is expected to hit the US, Japanese and European markets by the end of next year.
Tough Job in the Golden State
Newsom Says He Cant Do What it Takes to Get the Job of Governor
San Francisco Mayor Gary Newsom, threw in the towel today on the race for governor in California, and as of today California has no official candidate for governor. Tough times, worst economy in the nation, not surprise. A tough job. Mr. Newsom said, a young family and responsibilities at City Hall, I have found it impossible to commit the time required to complete this effort the way it needs to - and should be - done,".
"This is not an easy decision," he said. "But it is one made with the best intentions for my wife, my daughter, the residents of the city and county of San Francisco, and California Democrats." Newsom's withdrawal leaves state Attorney General Jerry Brown, who has yet to declare his candidacy, as the lone major Democrat in the 2010 race. Hope he does not chnage his mind too..
Car Lots Are Empty Everywhere
Car Dealers are Still Hurting Despite The Sales
An auto dealers group says the federal government's cash-for-clunkers program put thousands of cars on the roads was good sugar pump, but the hurt from the weak economy needs real solutions. Automotive Retailers says the rebates were worth about of $100 million, per each State.
Nationwide, 690,000 vehicles were sold under the program with rebates totaling $2.88 billion. Customers got rebates of $3,500 to $4,500 for trading in gas-guzzlers for more efficient new cars. Despite the boost, the state's car dealers say they're hurting. The industry has lost 20 percent of its dealerships over the past three years. There are now 550 dealership and the incomes are lower than ever.
