Venice in Autumn... And Other Times

Packing for a winter trip to Venice usually entails digging out Wellingtons or Gumboots, making sure that your umbrella is fully functioning and that your waterproof jacket really is just that.

At this time of year it is not unusual to view St Mark’s Square from the gang-planks set up by the rubbish collectors under what must be some dual employment scheme, though don’t be surprised if you arrive to bright blue skies and warm sunshine. Average daytime temperatures vary from 42°F (5°C) to 54°F (12°C).

Choosing a hotel within easy reach of Marco Polo airport, just in case the rest of the city is flooded by the acqua alta (high tides), is also a wise precaution. The four-star Carlton and Grand Canal Hotel, which offers modest-sized rooms and a friendly atmosphere geared to intrepid tourists, is also located right opposite the railway station and comfortably close to the main bus station. Be warned, though, that the cleaning regime commences at seven in the morning
