Leaders of the troubled South South region of Nigeria and their state organizations primarily Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Edo States and Cross River states consisting the South South region presently residing in the United States have come together to form a front called the South South Niger Delta Consortium (SSNDC). In a press release yesterday, the group affirmed its commitment to structural development demands for the South South Niger delta region of Nigeria, and the lack of national leadership from the South South region since the existence of Nigeria as a country. The group was speaking through the head of its Executive council, one Bright Aregs a doctor of Aeronautical engineering presently employed with Boeing Corp. USA, from their Los Angeles, office. We are committed to a fight for equity, fair representation and substantive development for our people of the South South region of Nigeria, the press reported quoted the leader.! Our goal is to begin such initiatives with our resources, we are not waiting for the Nigerian government, though we intend to open a lobby office in Abuja, Nigeria to press the plight of the South South region, we are committed to a technological development of the South South. The opportunity is now, that the region has continued to serve as the economic bread basket of the Nigerian economy, of which about 80 percent is presently derived from this region. We seek diversity in the economy of the region and that resources presently depleted from the region should be directed towards building alternative industry with IT/technology, Aero/Transport and computer manufacturing our main interest. The group however, deploys the lack of accountability, corruption, and lack of vision of the present leaders in the South South, which has led to unrest among the youths, even resulting to forced arm struggle.
The group also report working actively with the leaders of other Nigeria regional leaders in the international communities including the World Igbo Congress, Zumunta, Omo Egbe Yoruba and the conglomerate organization All Nigerian American Congress (ANAC) and leaders from NIDO. The International communities leaders are working on a document entitled the Manifesto of New Nigeria by International Community leaders, which specifically spell a road map for a none political but social economic reconstruction of Nigeria from the grass roots level. We are committed to a comprehensive work to bring hope to our people. With recent news coming out of Nigeria is evident that the political process can not solve our decay. We in the Nigerian international communities have some very sound and uncorrupted ideas and our love for our fatherland is our drive. The different groups are committed to a collective effort, however our main concern is the deficit of the South So! uth Niger Delta region. Other leaders in the group include the articulate and energetic Dr. Dan E. Austin the current Chairman of All Nigerian American Congress, Chief Ndem the Cross River State native, Dr. Abio Sokari, Dr. Reuben Jaja, Loius Ebodaghe, Sir Steven Bassey, Dr. Skipi, Emmanuel Umoh, of Akwa Ibom and Maculay Nunu. The group has constituted a 24 man board and established different executive council positions to raise funding and begin its work here in the US and shortly on the ground in Nigeria. Their website is www.ssndc.com, and contact email is memberservices@ssndc.com. Its is important that leadership in Nigeria learn quickly to embrace group with constructive and innovative way forward like SSNDC. With the exposure, technology and resources these successful individuals and their groups have gathered competing with the best in the international communities,! the wealth of development capabilities they can add to Nigeri! a at thi s time could be quite valuable and indeed not otherwise available to Nigeria. It must be noted that most recent developments in third world countries have primarily been catalyzed by such countries international communities with India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore to name a few successful cases. It would be interesting to see how the Nigerian government responds to such bold and constructive steps by natives of its South South Niger delta region, where the world oil supply have laid in uncertainty with arm unrest natives of the region demanding more development for their region. |
